Flower City Glass: Contributing to RIT's New Research Building

by Leslie Serdenia

Flower City Glass was a key contributor to the construction of the new research building at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), located at 84 Lomb Memorial Dr. in Rochester, NY. This modern, 39,000-square-foot facility, which provides flexible laboratory spaces for RIT's College of Science, Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, and Kate Gleason College of Engineering, features a design that embraces a more open and contemporary aesthetic.

As part of their involvement, Flower City Glass was responsible for the extensive portion of the envelope installation, inclusive of Rieder Cement Panel Rainscreen systems, Kingspan Insulated Panels, Fundermax Phenolic Panel Rainscreen facades, new aluminum-framed entrances, storefronts and multi-span Curtainwall systems. This work played a crucial role in achieving the building's vision of showcasing the activity and innovation happening within. By incorporating large windows and a glass-heavy design, the building's facade was made to look "nicer, classier in appearance to the outside world," as noted by project managers, while also fostering a sense of collaboration and interdisciplinary innovation by providing visual connections between the interior and exterior. This work aligns with RIT's broader strategic plan to create flexible spaces that foster discovery and collaboration.
